I often try to recreate the poignant moment in my life when my grandma and I taught each other a new technology: I shared my knowledge of the computer, and she shared her knowledge of the sewing machine. I do this by combining fiber processes with the digital realm or working on two projects simultaneously: one that engages my physical body in a tactile way and one that exercises my digital personhood. Making in different media satisfies my innate need to balance my sensory inputs and outputs.
Conceptually I gravitate toward my curiosities in social phenomena that I have observed or experienced that often seem simple in the observation but become intangible and complicated upon reflection. Embarking on a project is my attempt to make that reflection tangible again. For me the process of making is reductive; it’s a systematic search for a medium/form whose history can provide the complex context and an aesthetic that can bring the initial observation to a place that is more conversational.
